Annesley follows a systematic approach through Rocket phonics, which is linked to our choice of reading books from Rising Stars. We want children to learn to decode using the alphabetic code as early as possible before frustration has a chance to set in. All books are fully decodable up to turquoise level. Children work through the rocket phonics scheme daily, using online resources, pupil books and daily revision.

 In year 1, we have three afternoons where we teach reading skills to all the children as part of our Reading squad. Children that are  at risk of falling behind are supported with additional provision by our staff run Reading Squads to support their 'keeping up' with the reading provision.
