The importance of play
Play skills and communication skills develop hand in hand. Play is one of the most influential and important ways a child learns about the world.
By playing with both adults and children, children develop;
- Interaction and social skills
- Problem solving skills
- Imagination and creativity
- Concepts and properties
- Lots and lots of words!
Children learn words by doing something and hearing the word at the same time, for example while scribbling, a parent might say
“you’re drawing a picture!” The child makes the connection between what they are doing and what they are hearing.
