Autumn
Please take a look at what we have planned for the children over the Autumn term.
Our term will start with exploring the wonders of space, life as an astronaut and how we get day and night and the seasons. We will be exploring some space-themed stories, designing our own unique planets and creating some excellent space-themed artwork. We will also be investigating The Americas by testing or atlas skills, learning about the 50 states of the USA, investigating and comparing climates across the two continents and exploring why Florida is the perfect place to launch space shuttles from.
In the second half term, our focus will shift towards investigating the Benin Kingdom. We will explore when this civilisation started and ended. Alongside this, we will be looking at tales set in Benin, and investigating the culture and what life was like in this historic kingdom.
Take a look at what we've been getting up to this term.......
Week Beginning 2nd September 2024
The children have begun their science work, looking at the Solar System. The children researched the planets, naming them in order from the Sun and noting some facts about each.
Week Beginning 9th September 2024
Falcons were put into pairs and provided with an American state to research. Here are some of our findings!
Week Beginning 16th September 2024
We have been focussing on Sci-Fi narratives linking to our science work. Have a look at some examples of our imaginations.
Week Beginning 23rd September 2024
We have been focussing on place value since the start of the year and this week we have been comparing and ordering numbers, as well as rounding, which can be tricky.
Week Beginning 30th September 2024
In English, we are gearing up to writing our own non-chronological reports about our own planets. In order to do this, we have to look at all manner of criteria. This week, we have written 'facts' about our planet, designed what it looks like based on those 'facts' and also tried to include extra information in our sentences using parenthesis!
Week Beginning 7th October 2024
For computing, we have been learning all about 'E-Safety'. We have learnt about spam emails and how to deal with them, created strong passwords, highlighted the dangers of edited photographs and discussed ways to deal with problems if we come across them. We then created our own comic strip based on a problem we had learnt about. See for yourself what issues could affect us going forward.
Week Beginning 14th October 2024
This week, we have put all of our learning over the past three weeks into our own information texts. We have created fictional planets and created our non-chronological reports!
Week Beginning 4th November 2024
Maths is ramping up this week - we have been looking at multiples, but not only up to 12 x 12! We have been finding ways to know numbers in certain times tables using a variety of different techniques. See how we have done!
Week Beginning 11th November 2024
November is a special time of remembrance for so many reasons. In Year 5, we chose to mark the occasion of Armistice Day by writing poetry using simile - the comparing of one thing to another. Here are some of the examples the children created.
